A note from the author

We put this AVMovie together (a compilation of still photos and video clips) to show off London theatres as they are seen most often by theatre goers – by night.

Thanks to Ben Shafik for his lighthearted and informative commentary and Fionn O'Lochlainn for the original music.

Watch out for the new version with current liveries and the names of the theatres as they appear.

      Sweet Charity

A hit on Broadway in the sixties - it had loads of Tony nominations and an award and ran for 600 performances  especially noted for its choreography. It was revised in 2009 and had considerable success at the Chocolate Factory for a recent transfer to the Theatre Royal Haymarket.  It is very funny, charming and a great spectacle.

The score by Cy Coleman was inspired by Fellini's Nights of Cabiria. Stephen Mear's choreography is brilliant and expands on the traditional "big Spender' with all the girls competing for the customer sitting alone with a cigar and champagne.

The life of an optimistic and innocent 'taxi dancer' (hostess) who ever hopes to be rescued from the merry (and not so merry) go round of the life of selling favours in a night club.

Sweet Charity Men

Charity has a way with her and even rejects the co-horting habits of the other girls and comes near to a relationship several times.

As she throws her heart into each relationship she finds the men are all rats - or are they? Will wedding bells ring for her who is clearly deserving of more than the life she is living?  her energy and vibrance are certainly captivating but will the stigma of whore stay in the past - as innocent as she is?

Marriage after all is a quantum leap from the taxi dance.
